Who would know? Russia was the first European country to offer state-financed higher education for women. By order of Catherine the Great, the Smolny Institute opened in the early 1800’s and operated until just before the 1917 revolution. Originally established to educate girls of the noble elite, it later extended to those of the middle class.Photo: Google Images
