Thousands of visitors and numerous dignitaries from around the world attended the Fort Ross bicentennial celebration at this past weekend. Hosting the event were former commandant Alexander Rotchev and his lovely wife, Princess Elena.
In addition to the annual living history reenactments, this year’s guests were also able to tour the newly-reconstructed Magazin, or general store, enjoy outdoor concerts featuring groups like Limpopo and the Pyatnitsky Russian Folk Choir, and watch various dishes, like borscht, being cooked over the open fire.
Thanks to the Fort Ross
Conservancy, corporate sponsorships and many hardworking volunteers, Fort Ross will remain open to the public. This state park is a national historic treasure beloved by many. Help is always needed and much appreciated. To get involved contact frinterp@parks.ca.gov.
Two more events of special interest are scheduled for this year: the Russian Orthodox Church Con-Celebration at the Fort Ross Chapel on August 25th, and the Harvest Festival, celebrating the agricultural traditions at the fort on October 20th.
